Over the past few years, superhero movies have become more inclusive and have shown a significant celebration of diversity. Fortunately, this trend is continuing — it’s been announced that a live adaption movie of a classic comic series will feature a plus-sized superhero.
The comic series “Faith” features a blonde, nerdy, plus-size superhero named Faith Herbert. In 2015, Sony partnered with Valiant Comics to make this motion picture possible. While there aren’t many details about the movie yet, including the release date and cast members, comic book fans are already excited about this adaption.
Maria Melnik, “American Gods” writer, has been announced as one of the people who will be working on the screenplay. “Faith” is going to star a female superhero and while be written and partly created by women as well.
With about 3.67 million American children choosing to dress up as their favorite superhero for Halloween, it’s important for kids of all genders, skin tones, and body shapes to have a superhero role model who they can see themselves in. The film industry has certainly been taking steps to have more inclusivity across all platforms.
Faith not only has awe-inspiring powers, but she’s a sci-fi nerd who loves Doctor Who. She’s been around since 1992, but the current iteration of her comic books was released in 2016, written by Jody Houser. And while many female superheroes in comic books have unrealistically thin frames, Faith is full-figured and proud of it.
“She’s very comfortable with herself,” Houser said. “I’m not going to ignore her size, but I don’t want it to be a big issue or a big plot line with her, and I think it would be out of character to make it that.”
While Marvel and DC have been ruling the superhero world the past several years, comic fans are ready for the Valiant superhero to make her debut. Fortunately, Faith won’t be the only Valiant Comics character coming to life. She’s part of a team of heroes who have telekinetic and psychic powers. Valiant is just starting to plan their film strategy, but viewers can expect more superheroes to follow in Faith’s footsteps.
So while superhero fans may have to wait a few years to see the film, we can all look forward to seeing a strong, smart, powerful, full-figured woman take the screen by storm.
