You have probably heard that plastic is not good for the environment. It takes a very long time to break down. We see this plastic trash left everywhere from along the road to covering our oceans. This is particularly bad because of the pollution and harm to the environment it causes. This is why biodegradable plastics have been invented. In this video, you will learn about biodegradable plastics and why they are important.
What does biodegradation mean? It simply means that microorganisms can eat this material and turn it back into nutrients. This essentially recycles that material back into the environment, thus avoiding any pollution. This normally is not possible with plastic. However, plastic can be treated with chemicals to speed up this process. However, an even more promising invention is biodegradable plastics that aren’t really plastics at all. Some are made out of plants such as corn starch that will degrade quickly. This will be greatly beneficial to our environment because plastic will not be taking up nearly as much of our landfills. It also means that any of this “plastic” that does make it into the environment will break down before it causes too many problems.
