The video “What is the ‘ Memory Care’ Section in Assisted Living?” features Director of Sales and Marketing Jennifer van Dam. Jennifer’s 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry, as of 2019, makes her an authority on memory care. Some of her expertise in this area came from time spent providing adult daycare and long-term care services.
The resources Jennifer provides based on prior roles now benefit seniors and their families connected with CareOne at the Cupola.
This includes assuring loved ones that a memory care facility provides “the best of both worlds.” Speaking of the best of both worlds, this is what Jennifer says: She mentions the safety and security of a living facility and “the ability to do activities in a larger environment.”
The doors are secured to keep the seniors contained. However, residences in a memory care unit also have space to walk in the “larger environment” that is available for them. If seniors do want to move around the building, a staff member is also there to gently guide them back to their starting point. For some of the residents, this would mean directing them with compassion back to the memory care unit.
Activities in a memory care unit are also different from those in a standard assisted living area. Some of these activities help patients navigate their individual memory journeys based on their current dementia stages.
